Bundesliga Matchday 24 roundup
Stuttgart hammered Hannover in Sunday's relegation six-pointer while Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen shared the spoils. Elsewhere, league leaders Borussia Dortmund and Schalke both slipped to damaging defeats.
Wolfsburg 1 - 1 Werder Bremen
A late equalizer from Max Kruse (pictured) ensured Bremen kept up their incredible record of scoring in every league game this season and took a point from their hosts. After a scrappy first half, John Brooks powered in a header from a free kick to give Wolfsburg the lead before Kruse restored parity. The concession meant Wolfsburg dropped to seventh.
Stuttgart 5-1 Hannover
Stuttgart steam-rolled Hannover in the big relegation six-pointer on Sunday. Victory would have seen Hannover climb above Stuttgart in the table, but that was never on the cards. Mario Gomez fired the hosts into a fourth minute lead and an Ozan Muhammed Kabak brace put Stuttgart in firm control. Jonathas de Jesus pulled one back for Hannover, but Steven Zuber added two more to complete the rout.
Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-5 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich crushed Gladbach to move level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga. Bayern were two up inside 11 minutes, with Javi Martinez and Thomas Müller each finding the net. Lars Stindl halved the deficit shortly before halftime, but the champions turned the screw in the second half, with two goals from Robert Lewandowski and a Serge Gnabry strike adding the gloss.
Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 Hoffenheim
Goncalo Paciencia's last gasp winner completed a stunning late turnaround for Frankfurt against ten-man Hoffenheim. Filip Kostic put the hosts ahead, but Hoffenheim took charge with goals from Joelinton and Ishak Belfodil. But Kasim Nuhu's red card put Hoffenheim under pressure and Sebastien Haller appeared to have rescued a point for Frankfurt, but they went one better through Paciencia's winner.
Schalke 0-4 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Fortuna Düsseldorf capitalized on basic errors by Schalke to pick up a convincing win and pile the pressure on their beleaguered coach Domenico Tedesco. Dodi Lukebakio's penalty gave the visitors a halftime lead, before Schalke collapsed in the second. Dawid Kownacki doubled the advantage and Benito Raman made it three soon after. Schalke's misery was complete when Kownacki added a late fourth.
Nuremberg 0-1 RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig tightened their grip on Champions League qualification with a gritty win in Nuremberg. Ralf Rangnick's side won courtesy of a strike five minutes before halftime from Lukas Klostermann, who thumped the ball in after Nuremberg failed to fully deal with a Leipzig corner. Nuremberg spurned their best chance to get something from the game when Hanno Behrens's penalty struck the bar.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Freiburg
Charles Aranguiz scored his first Bundesliga goal in 18 months as Leverkusen picked up a win that puts them within four points of the Champions League places. Leverkusen's turnaround under Bosz has been remarkable and they continued their fine form with a deserved win, which came courtesy of Aranguiz's first half strike and Leon Bailey's in the second. Freiburg remain in 13th.
Hertha Berlin 2-1 Mainz
Hertha Berlin came from behind to beat Mainz at the Olympiastadion. The visitors took the lead straight after the restart through a Niklas Stark own goal. But Hertha's response was almost immediate. Marko Grujic struck back five minutes later, but the matchwinner was the man who had scored the own goal. Stark struck to make it 2-1, dragging Hertha up to eighth place.
Augsburg 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
League leaders Borussia Dortmund suffered defeat at Augsburg, dealing their title hopes a blow. Ji Dong-won was the hero for the hosts, netting twice including a delectable chip for the second. Paco Alcacer came off the bench to cut Augsburg's lead in half but it proved only a consolation, as Lucien Favre's side faced up to the possibility of Bayern Munich drawing level at the top of the table.
