Bundesliga Round 4 in Pictures
Schalke trip up Leverkusen
Leverkusen were expected to win in Gelsenkirchen, but it was almost all Schalke, as the Royal Blues logged a 2-0 victory. New acquisition Kevin-Prince Boateng (L) played a positive role, harmonizing well with man-of-the match Jefferson Farfan (R, 1 goal, 1 assist). It was Schalke's first league win of 2013-14.
Hanover put the hurt on Mainz
Mainz rolled into Hanover with a perfect 3 for 3 season start, and the southern German upstarts quickly took the lead. But the hosts came roaring back, smacking four past their guests. The 4-1 win means Hanover leapfrog Mainz in the table.
Wolves take the bite out of Hertha
A convincing 2-0 home display by Wolfsburg sent newly promoted Hertha Berlin down to their first loss of the season. The Wolves were aided by playmaker Diego winning a penalty by going down very easily in the box. But the hosts were the stronger team over most of the 90 minutes and deserved to keep their home record spotless.
Hamburg crush hapless Braunschweig
Coming with only one point into their home match against the league's worst team, Hamburg knew this was a must-win affair. And they pulled off a 4-0 victory that could hardly have been more comfortable had their opponents failed to turn up. Meanwhile Braunschweig look out of their depth.
Foals run rampant over Bremen
Mönchengladbach needed a half-hour to get going in their 4-1 victory against an insipid-looking Werder Bremen. But once the Foals hit their stride, the difference in quality between the two teams was blindingly obvious. Gladbach even scored Bremen's face-saver with an own goal, but that didn't dampen the celebrations.
Augsburg get historic win in Nuremberg
The closest thing to a sure bet in the Bundesliga was that Augsburg wouldn't get three points in Nuremberg. The Acorns had never recorded a first-division victory at their local rivals' home ground. Never until Saturday, that is. A goal by Kevin Vogt was the difference in a 1-0 defensive affair and broke a long-standing curse.
Freiburg surprise Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich played (and won) the UEFA Super Cup on Friday, so their round 4 match against Freiburg was pushed ahead to Tuesday. And the underdogs took advantage of Bayern's distracted focus and decision to rest a host of stars. The result was a 1-1 draw that felt like a win for tiny Freiburg.
Stuttgart put a major hurt on Hoffenheim
Stuttgart came into their home match against Hoffenheim in the doldrums, but Vedad Ibisevic was a man on a mission against the club where he made his big breakthrough. Hoffenheim seemed to have left their defense in Sinsheim, and the Bosnian striker banged three goals past them. Stuttgart came out big 6-2 winners and claimed their first league victory of the season.
Mkhitaryan brace seals Dortmund win
It's hard to pronounce, and even harder to spell, but Bundesliga fans are going to have to get used to the name Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian playmaker scored both of Dortmund's goals as they won in Frankfurt 2-1. That result preserves Dortmund's perfect record and takes the men in yellow to the top of the table.
