Great Barrier Reef accident is "outrageous" says Australian PM

Kevin Rudd has voiced his anger about the running aground on Saturday of a Chinese coal carrier that spilt oil in the Great Barrier Reef, a world heritage site. The PM said those responsible would be brought to account.

The Shen Neng 1 was carrying about 65,000 metric tons of coal to China when it ran aground in the Great Barrier Reef near Great Keppel Island, Australia. Marine regulation is likely to be reviewed because the ship was not where it should be at all. There is speculation that shortcuts through reefs are being used illegally as more coal is being exported from Australia.
