Matchday Eight Predictions
Germany's top players swap international duty for Bundesliga action as domestic football returns this weekend. DW's Calle Kops gives his predictions ahead of matchday eight.
Bayern favorites against Bremen
As a travelling fan you don't normally expect much from a trip to Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, but there's always room for a small surprise. This Saturday though, Werder Bremen fans will get nothing out of their journey south. The hosts won't even need to get out of third gear to win this game. Prediction: Bayern to win 2-0.
Mainz to win at home
For many experts, Mainz were one of the relegation candidates before this season kicked off. Now they are sitting sixth in the table and have yet to lose. Football is anything but predictable. In their last match against Gladbach, Mainz earned a deserved draw. This time round, against Augsburg, they should manage one better. Prediction: 1-0 to Mainz.
The Foals by a nose
If you look at previous matches between Hanover and Gladbach, Hanover should be the clear favorites. Add to that Gladbach's stunted creativity - far too many attacks are required to score just one goal and things look worse for Lucien Favre's men. However, we reckon the guests will pull it off, somehow! Prediction: Gladbach to win 1-0.
Wolves head south
With their energetic coach Christian Streich on the sideline, Freiburg are once again turning heads this season. Against Wolfsburg they will also be hard to beat, but the Wolves will have enough bite about them to lead the visitors to victory. Old Ivica Olic will strike to give Wolfsburg the three points. Prediction: Wolfsburg to win 2-1.
Leverkusen hunting for points
Things are tough at the moment for Stuttgart. After their home win against Hanover, Stuttgart then lost in Berlin. And, in their upcoming home fixture against Leverkusen, there will be no points either. Stuttgart's solitary effort will be cancelled out by Stefan Kiessling, who will once again prove he is worthy of an international call-up. Prediction: Leverkusen to win 2-1.
Defense solidarity not enough
Cologne's team looks pretty much the same as it did last season in the second division. Now though, they are in the top flight and defending well isn't enough to ensure prolonged success. Whether Gündogan plays or not, Dortmund will find a way through and end their own poor run of form. Prediction: 1-0 to BVB.
Time for Catenaccio?
All eyes will be on Schalke's new coach Roberto Di Matteo this weekend. Will he play it safe or go for a more attacking style of football? Either way, the Royal Blues should get a win in their first game under their new coach. Hertha Berlin, visitors to Gelsenkirchen on the weekend, won't be able to stop the new coach from having an effect. Prediction: 2-0 to Schalke.
HSV to continue good form
It was a big moment for Hamburg when they won against Dortmund in their last Bundesliga fixture. But now, the effect of new coach Joe Zinnbauer is wearing off and against an in-form Hoffenheim side on Sunday, HSV will only manage a draw. A point is still a point though. Prediction: 1-1.
Paderborn to come up short, again
Paderborn have shown me up as a football expert this season. My number one candidate for relegation is playing really well and currently sit in ninth position. The arrival of Frankfurt's clever coach Thomas Schaaf and his technically-skilled team will prove too much for the hosts though. Prediction: Frankfurt to win 1-0.
Great turnaround
DW sports guru Ross Dunbar earned us a whopping six points from his predictions last round. That means we now have a grand total of 29 points and are sitting in 1,031st position overall.
