We're going to Ibiza!
This 90s Vengaboys party hit is storming the charts again – an ironic comment on the Austrian political scandal. But it also makes you want to go to Ibiza. Holiday fun is always possible here, with or without a scandal.
Holidays at last
Most holidaymakers on Ibiza come from Great Britain – not from Austria. Popular lodgings are the former farms called Fincas. They can easily be 300 years old. With pool and sea views they are barely affordable. Stars from the world of sport and show business spend millions of dollars on a decent place to stay.
Beautiful living
If you want, you can buy something nice. Parisian star architect Jean Nouvel has created this brightly colored luxury residential park, the "Las Boas Building". 1,979 apartments ranging from 80 to 300 square meters (262 to 984 square ft.). Price is only available on request.
All so blue
Secluded bays, turquoise waters – this promise attracts millions of tourists to Ibiza every year. The more difficult it is to reach the enchanting bays, the greater the chance of finding peace and quiet. The crystal clear water, like here in a bay near Portinatx, entices you to snorkel, swim or dive.
The jetset dock here
Ibiza has a reputation as an island of drop-outs with a high proportion of hippies, as a hot-spot for ravers and, of course, as a meeting place for the international jet set. Package tourists do not dock in the marina of Ibiza. More likely Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian. On the weekends, parking spaces for private aircraft are also becoming scarce.
The nightlife
The nights on Ibiza are long. The Balearic Island is particularly known for its nightlife in Ibiza City and Sant Antoni. In the alleys of the old town and in the squares, one restaurant follows another, one bar after another. Here you only "warm up". The actual all-night parties take place elsewhere.
Dancing the night away
In the 1990s, the international club scene discovered the Mediterranean island. That inevitably had repercussions. There are a lot of huge discotheques where you can dance until dawn. The best DJs in the world spin records here. Sven Väth is a regular guest every summer.
Hippie outfits
In the 1960s, the hippies made Ibiza their adopted home. They sought sun and freedom and along the way helped the sleepy island to an unprecedented advancement to a tourist island. They also made the white cotton dresses and wicker hats a fashion success. At the hippie market near Sant Carles you can still buy the full range of hippie accessories.
Sound check
The legendary "Café del Mar" in St. Antoni de Portmany, in the bay Cala des Moro, provides the soundtrack for the summer island Ibiza feeling. Chill, listen to cool music and enjoy the sunset – that's all you have to do here. In the summer season, thousands do this every day. The season traditionally starts on Good Friday and ends in the first week of November.
World Heritage Dalt Vila
The old center of Ibiza town – Dalt Vila – has been a World Heritage Site since 1999. Its fortress is the best preserved one in the whole Mediterranean area. From the top of the city wall you have a beautiful view over the winding alleys of the old town. Other important sights are the cathedral of Ibiza and the monastery of Santo Domingo.
