Namibia's post-colonial relationship with Germany

In May 2021, Germany agreed to fund €1.1 billion worth of Namibian projects over a 30-year period after officially recognizing the Herero-Nama genocide. Many see it as a substitute for Germany paying reparations for the atrocities of its colonial past. However, not everyone in Namibia is happy with the form of compensation. Josey Mahachi talks to Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba.

Germany is offering Namibia €1.1 billion over 30 years. The money is expected to be used for development projects that benefit the Herero and Nama people. However, some Herero and Nama are demanding official reparations. Between 1904 and 1908, Germany's colonial forces reacted to a rebellion by the Ovaherero and Nama people in Namibia with brutal violence and prison camps. The trauma and political repercussions remain unresolved.
