World leaders getting their COVID shots — in pictures
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has joined a growing list of world leaders who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Here's an overview of those who've gotten their shots so far.
Joe Biden
US President Joe Biden received his second dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine in January. By the middle of April, around 120 million people in the US had received at least one dose, according to figures from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over 70 million people have been fully vaccinated.
Benjamin Netanjahu
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjahu was also given the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine. Israel obtained millions of the vaccine in part by agreeing to share with Pfizer medical data on the product's impact. By mid-April, around 53% of Israel's 9.3 million population had received both Pfizer doses. Israel has largely reopened its economy while the pandemic appears to be receding.
Narendra Modi
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is administered of the Indian-made Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine on March 1. India has expanded its vaccination drive beyond health care and front-line workers, offering the shots to older people and those with medical conditions that put them at risk. India now has the second-highest number of cases in the world following a recent surge in infections.
Boris Johnson
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson received the AstraZeneca vaccine in March. The British-developed vaccine has been at the center of controversy. Several countries suspended its use over fears it caused blood clots. He got his second dose in June.
Jean Castex
French Prime Minister Jean Castex received the AstraZeneca vaccine on the same day as Johnson. He received the shot in a televised display designed to boost public confidence in the vaccine.
Scott Morrison
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison received the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine. He claimed this month that Australia had outperformed Germany, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan at the same stage of their vaccination rollouts. But he has abandoned his target of having all Australians vaccinated fully by the end of the year.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan received his dose of the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine in front of TV cameras in January. The aim was to alleviate any public doubts about the effectiveness of the shot. Turkey has administered around 19 million doses to date, depending entirely on Sinovac until BioNTech-Pfizer inoculations began on April 2.
Joko Widodo
Indonesian President Joko Widodo was another to receive the Sinovac shot. He got his second dose on January 27 in a live TV broadcast. The government aims to vaccinate 181.5 million people by next year.
Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was vaccinated with AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine in April, but her office did not release any photos of her receiving the jab, unlike other world leaders. Her office instead released pictures of documents certifying her vaccination.
