An aerial view of the Yasuni National Park, in Ecuador's northeastern jungle, Thursday, May 17, 2007. Ecuador will open bidding for a major oil project in Yasuni National Park next June if the country does not raise international funding to abandon the proposal, the oil minister said. The jungle area, which holds close to 1 billion barrels of crude, is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Some environmentalists say the reserve has more varieties of plant life than the United States and Canada combined. (ddp images/AP Photo/Dolores Ochoa) ++ AP ++
Foto: Kay Nietfeld +++(c) dpa - Bildfunk+++

Shell's Environment Vice President, Allard Castelein, passes a banner of Friends of the Earth activists as he arrives for the start of the court case of Nigerian farmers against Shell, in The Hague, Netherlands, Wednesday Jan. 30, 2013. Dutch judges are ruling in a landmark civil action by Nigerian farmers who want to hold oil giant Shell liable for poisoning their fish ponds and farmlands with leaking pipelines. The decision being announced Wednesday could set a legal precedent for holding multinationals responsible for their actions overseas. Lawyers for the four Nigerians from the oil-rich Niger delta argue Shell makes key policy decisions at its Hague headquarters, so the Dutch court has jurisdiction. (Foto:Peter Dejong/AP/dapd)

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has sided squarely with the 30,000 plaintiffs, Indians and colonists, in a class-action suit, dubbed an Amazon Chernobyl by environmentalists, over the slow poisoning of a Rhode Island-sized expanse of rainforest with millions of gallons of oil and billions more of toxic wastewater.
